I commented off one of Ben's post, but I figured I would put it in a post for easier access...
I haven't blogged before, so I am not sure if this is the appropriate response place, but hopefully it works for now.
Ben, I appreciate all of the information, it is very helpful to have someone on this end that has already been there.
Financially, I just sent out my support letters about a week ago and Jonathan is about to do the same. Jonathan and I received a large amount of support from one donor, so that is a early sigh of relief on that end.
Jonathan and I have now two weeks in a row met for dinner and just began to bond and share concerning the trip. We decided that prayer is an essential part of preparation for the trip and during the trip. Therefore, Jonathan and I are going to try to set a time aside each week and meet and pray. We are starting today and hopefully can keep this pattern up weekly.
A few questions that come to my mind:
What is the water situation in Haiti as far as drinkable or do we need to bring something to purify it?
Should Jonathan and I buy our plane tickets to Miami soon and should we do ticketing through CrossWorld? Also, note Jonathan and I are going to buy open ended tickets to make our departure flexible.
What is the situation down there as far as food? Since, Jonathan and I are going to be staying for 2 months, Burce suggested shipping food down there for our time and to purchase some there.
I like the book idea. I am about to order that off Amazon now.
Also, Ben where is your location. You may told me before, but it sleeps my mind. Jonathan and I are at the University of Virginia(#4 seed in the NCAA tourney!!)
That is all that comes to mind right now.
Blessings in Christ,
John

wow, i didn't know that you guys were going to stay for a couple months! for some reason i thought it would only be a couple extra weeks. well that changes things a bit. i'll try and gear my "lists" and our preparation for your extended stay. It may also be beneficial for you guys to learn some Haitian Creole before you go. I recommend working through a book by Wally Turnbull titled "Creole Made Easy". You can get it for $15 on amazon.com. The lessons are pretty simple and will give the basics of the language. Also, the short dictionary in the back will be one of your closest friends while you are there :)
To answer a couple of your other questions:
don't book your flights just yet. I need to figure out where we'll be staying at first. What airport out of virginia will you be flying? I have never bought my tickets through crossworld, so i don't know if there is any benefit to that. i usually by them myself and then submit a reimbursement report.
there will be purified water at the house where we'll be staying, but there is not any in the communities. When i stayed there for a while i did bring a water purifier that i used a few times on long day trips when i couldn't carry enough purified water. But it is not a necessity because for the most part you can bring enouch water with you. but if you want to get a water purifier, i would not dissuade you from it.
as far as food is concerned...a couple questions before i give my answer: are you going to be preparing your own dinners or do you just need to bring breakfasts and lunches? how did bruce recommend you ship the food and how much would it cost?
hope this helps
Your advice is helpful and any adjustments due to our longer stay would be appreciated.
Bruce recommended the same book for learning Creole and I have started going through some of the chapters.
The following is the statement on food from Bruce:
"The team house has a freezer and a stove top (oven doesn't work unfortunately) and you will be making most of your own
meals. There are pots and pans and silverware and all that stuff and there are linens and towels there so your shouldn't have to bring much housekeeping stuff. However, you will need to bring some food with you or ship some in or buy it here."
We will probably fly out of Dulles airport out of DC because I think that would be the cheapest route. The other alternative would be Norfolk, which is where I live.
Also, are there specific tools you suggest that we should bring for the engineering work we will be doing?
I want to be prepared for the trip, but at the same time would like to bring stuff down for Bruce with extra space we may have. I am not sure how possible that is with us staying for 2 months.
